The hospital admits acute patients from Korogwe and Lushoto hospitals by referral. Some drug abuse patients have been admitted from other areas as well. Patients from all over country are referred to LMH for rehabilitation. Mentally handicapped people may live in the institution if they have no relatives or have other serious problems.

The main methods of treatment are medication, group discussions and work- and occupational therapy. But there is also modern entertainment like video films weekly and patients can play football. Patient can also use the hospital library and there is a small shop and canteen. The patients love music and singing in hospital choir and other religious activities are part of treatment.

The hospital has a farm, garden, forest, tea fields, carpentry shop and kitchen, where patients can work. For example 600 trees were planted to reforest the area and the patients produce carpets, doormats and other things in occupational therapy.

The hospital has new accommodations for guests and also a new telephone line is helping to keep contact to the outside world.
